Women and adolescent girls seeking safe abortion services and people affected by HIV/AIDS face unique barriers in accessing care and often experience stigma, discrimination and violations of bodily integrity

OVERVIEW

People affected by HIV and AIDS and women seeking safe abortion face disproportionate and similar barriers to care. Like HIV, abortion is highly politicized and stigmatized, resulting in discrimination, coercion and violence, including in the form of laws that directly or indirectly limit access to services. Women – particularly young women and adolescents – are increasingly at the center of each of these battles. Despite the unique similarities across HIV and safe abortion, advocacy efforts to date have remained largely separate.

Our Bodies, Our Fight is a campaign aimed at bringing together constituents from across the HIV and safe abortion spaces to explore similarities across the issue areas and discuss tactics for more effective joint advocacy.

CALL TO ACTION

Activists focused on safe abortion and HIV/AIDS commit to working together to advance access to safe abortion everywhere and to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.

  • We see the linkage between activism for HIV/AIDS and safe abortion as a critical piece of broader efforts to build a world in which every girl and woman can decide what to do with her body, her life and her future, free from discrimination, coercion and violence.
  • We come from many different countries and diverse backgrounds.
  • We are guided by a feminist agenda and the principles of bodily autonomy and equity, celebration of diversity, respect for human rights and the vision of health for all.

AIDS 2018 Event

On 21 July, 2018, on the sidelines of AIDS 2018, a global partnership of safe abortion, HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) organizations hosted Our bodies, Our fight: Uniting the movements for HIV/AIDS and safe abortion care. This half-day event brought together more than 150 prominent global advocates and decision-makers across the HIV and safe abortion spaces to discuss shared strategies and strengthen joint advocacy to address barriers to rights-based health care – with a focus on the champion countries of Brazil, India and South Africa.
